About Us

Woodnote Studios is an Audio/MIDI based recording facility, conveniently located off Route 32 in Franklin, CT. Woodnote Studios was designed to cater to the singer/songwriter. A relaxing atmosphere, along with professional recording and musical equipment, makes Woodnote Studios the perfect spot for musicians who want to record their songs without the intimidation of the bigger studio. Studio Rental

Studio Rental

The facility can be rented for band rehearsal or independent recording for $150/day (6 hours). If you prefer, we can provide a backline of drums, bass amp, guitar amp, and baby grand piano. Sessions requiring longer than 6 hours are subject to availability, and are charged an additional rate of $30/hr. Rental of the facility for recording purposes is available to qualified Nuendo/Cubase engineers.

Mastering

We offer small scale software Mastering at $30/song. To learn more about the Mastering process, click the Mixing tab to the left. Our turn-around time is about 2 days for a full album.

Midi Sequencing

Midi Sequencing

If you require backing tracks for live, or previously recorded material, we can program the tracks you require via MIDI and our large collection of Sample Library's. You can learn more about Sample Library's by clicking the Arranging tab to the left. Standard studio rates apply. Contact us to learn more!

Re-mixes

Re-Mixes

A remix has a lot of different definitions for different people and genres. We refer to it strictly as taking the tracks from a previously recorded session, and mixing them again. You may want the focus of the song to be different, increase the fidelity of an old recording, or perhaps you are just a hobbyist and are looking for a more professional sound. Whatever the reason, contact us to find out more about the process and how we can help!

Many of our clients are purely vocalists, or voice students. CD's of popular songs featuring them have become a popular gift idea. Arranging

What is Arranging? Most of our clients are singer/songwriters. This means they are usually proficient in one or two instruments, but not enough to cover all the instrumentation that makes up a full song or album. For example, you sing and play guitar, but don't play bass, drums, etc. Sometimes, all you want is just acoustic guitar and you singing. But other times, an artist might want a more produced sound with full backing tracks. This is where we can help! We're available to add the addiontal instrumentation you are sometimes looking for to your track or album. This generally includes drums. bass, electric rhythm and lead guitar, piano (electric piano, organs), string sections and more exotic instruments through Sample Library's. What's a Sample Library?A sample library is a collection of audio clips (samples) of real instruments, recorded in a real environment. Just about anything you can think of has been sampled. The benefit of this to you is they are often very high quality samples, and are fairly easy to intergrate into a song. For instance, if you want a string section on one of your tracks, one option is to hire session musicians who can play the part you write (which you will have to write and have for them). They come, record, and we mix it into the song. This can cost over $500. The alternative utilizing sampled instruments is instantaneous (and therefore cheaper), sounds oftentimes just as good (and in a lot of cases, better), and allows for more freedom for creativity. It is a great solution for a solo artist who is looking for a big commerical sound without spending a small fortune. How can we help?Jim Wheeler, (Owner & Lead Engineer) is a multi-instrumentalist, and professional musician with over 15 years experience. He has arranged and composed backing and lead tracks for numerous artist releases and theatrical productions. In addition, we also have access to a wide variety of session musicians who specialize in a certain instruments and styles. Though standard studio hourly rates still apply, Jim does not charge an additional session fee to compose, arrange, and perform additonal parts on your album or song. If you listen to our audio samples throughout the website, Jim has played or arranged musical parts for many of the songs.

Mixing

What is Mixing? Mixing is usually the second stage of the recording process after tracking. In this stage, previously recorded audio tracks are literally "mixed" together to form a more balanced version of the song. This is accmplished through several processes, including level balancing, equalization, compression, panoramic positioning, and sometimes adding effects like reverb and delay. When a song is to be mixed, the final desired sound is discussed, and the engineer uses these processes to best accomplish the artisit's goal. Entire books are written on each process, so it's unrealistic to go into much detail here. If you are not familiar with recording, the important thing to know about mixing is it is usually the longest process, and usually makes the biggest difference in getting the final desired sound. What is Tracking?Tracking is the first stage of the recording process. Each instrument is usually recorded one at a time. This is to eliminate what's known as "bleed" from other audio sources. For example, you can sing and play at the same time- but the microphone on the vocals will pick up some of the acoustic sound, and vice versa for the acoustic mics. So when it comes time to mix, if you want to turn up the vocals, you're inevitably also turning up the acoustic guitar. Tracking is arguably the most important step in the recording process because if it's not done properly, there's not much that can be done to fix certain problems in the mixing stage. Artists looking to add backing tracks to their song are usually asked to play to a click track (metronome). This can be made into a drum beat so it is a little easier to feel the groove of the song. The reason for this, is because without one, even the best musicians are bound to slow down and speed up the tempo. This is fine (and sometimes desireable!) for acoustic only songs. But songs that require backing tracks need to follow a set map. The bass player is not going to know when the guitarist sped up without a click track. So either the bassist tries to guess, and the part comes out sloppy sounding, or he continues to play the correct tempo and the guitarist sounds bad when the discrepancy occurs. What is Mastering?After a song has been tracked and mixed, it is then bounced down to a single stereo file. Similar processes used in the mix stage are used in mastering, but rather than affecting one track, they affect the entire song. The purpose of mastering a song is to balance out any problems, enhance certain aspects, and control dynamics. But mastering is more than processing audio. It is also arranging the song order, timing the silence between the songs, setting track, title, and artist name information, and making sure volumes between songs are relatively the same. Mastering generally makes a considerable improvement to a song or album. However, although it has much in common with mixing, it is preferable to have a dedicated mastering engineer complete this stage of the recording if it is intended for commercial release. This isn't to say the mix engineer can't or won't do a good job mastering the same project, but fresh ears and an engineer who's job is dedicated to this process is ideal.

FAQ

How much will it cost to record my project?That depends on many things. How rehearsed are you? How complex is the arrangement? How many songs will you do? The more prepared you are, the less it will cost. Contact us so we can learn more about your project and give you an accurate price quote. Our normal rates are $35/hour.Can I rent the studio?The studio can be rented for $150/day (6 hours). Conditions apply. Please contact us for more information. You can download a copy of the rental agreement on the bottom of the page.How long will it take to record my project?Again this depends a lot on how rehearsed you are. We've had people who can record a song in 2 hours, and people who take 10. A basic 3 minute song with a typical arrangement (guitar, bass, drums, vocal) usually takes between 4-6 hours, including mixing time.What equipment do you use?You can check out our Gear page for a detailed list. Our host application is Nuendo 3. We master in WaveLab and can import projects done in Cubase and Sonor.Do you master your own projects?We can do some mastering, and it does make a considerable difference. It's usually not a good idea, however, to have the same person who mixed the record also master it. In the same way that a writer doesn't edit his own book, most clients are better off at sending the final mixes off to a Mastering House. They have much better equipment for mastering, near-perfect acoustically treated rooms, are more experienced and have clean ears to the project. That being said, if you just can't afford to have it mastered, or are just doing a demo, we certainly can do the mastering for you and have some great tools for it.I have a computer at home and some recording equipment, can I bring my tracks in just for mixing?Absolutely! Contact us for more information about what formats will work best.
